US chem production index falls 3.6% in February on winter storm impact
The American Chemistry Council’s (ACC) US Chemical Production Regional Index (US CPRI) fell 3.6% month on month in February, as measured on a three-month moving average (3MMA) basis.
The decline came after gains of 0.7% and 1.3% in January and December, respectively, the chemical industry trade group said on Wednesday.
Chemical output fell in all regions as winter storms disrupted chemical production in the US Gulf Coast and other parts of the country that rely on raw materials from the region.
February chemical output for the Gulf Coast region fell 5.8% from January, the largest month on month decline since September 2008.
Chemical production fell sharply in all categories, except consumer products, manufactured fibres, fertilizers and other specialty chemicals.
The largest declines occurred in petrochemical and other organic chemicals and plastic resins, with smaller declines in the production of inorganic chemicals, coatings, adhesives and pesticides.
Year on year, the index fell 3.8% from February 2020 - the 21st consecutive month of year-on-year declines and a deterioration from recent progress, ACC said.
